Special Services and Events

Nursery Needs Volunteers
We are looking for adults ages 18 to 80 who are willing to volunteer in the nursery at the 11 a.m. service once or twice a month. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of our little ones and share the care and love of Jesus with them. You will be working alongside our paid nursery attendant.

Nursery volunteers will be asked to fill out a short application form and attend a Safeguarding God’s Children session. If interested: contact Pastor
Martha, 892-7160 or prmartha@salcvan.org.

Child Safety Training Sessions
In our new procedure to keep all God’s children safe from harm and abuse, two more training sessions are scheduled for persons who will be working with children at St. Andrew this year as well as those volunteering at Orchards Kids Club. Both sessions will be held after the 11 a.m. services Sunday, Sept. 7 and 14, in the conference room near the office complex. The sessions can be emotional because of the subject material, but everyone who has attended them acknowledges how important the training is for all who work with children and youth.

LCS annual dinner on tap
Lutheran Community Services’ annual dinner will be served Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Portland Marriott. If you are interested in attending please contact the church office, 892-7160, for your invitation, which will provide details about the evening.

Thursday, September 25
Inn at OrchARDS, 5 to 7 p.m.

St. Andrew will serve a warm meal to guests at the Inn at Orchards. You can help by making food or serving. Contact: Suzanne Bussey, 944-8707.

September 14 Book Club Meeting
The book for September’s discussion is Shane Claiborne’s The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical. Discounted copies are available in the office for $11 each. Sept. 14 hosts: Pastor Jim and Mary Stender.

Grow through Journey of Faith
Come and Grow is the second step in Journey of Faith. This group will meet from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. two Sundays a month, beginning Oct. 5. Sessions will include a light meal; child care is provided on request. Depending on demand, a second section of Come and Grow may be
offered on a weekday evening.

In these sessions we prayerfully reflect on the Sunday Bible lessons, discuss how God is working in our lives, and learn more about St. Andrew and the Lutheran faith. Newcomers will be paired with a faith partner or sponsor and encouraged to participate in regular worship, prayer, Bible reading and service. Those in this process may become members of St. Andrew through baptism or the affirmation of baptism at Easter time.

For information or to sign up for Come and Grow, contact the church office or a pastor at 892-7160, or office@salcvan.org. If you are a current member of St. Andrew interested in becoming a faith partner, contact Pastor Martha or Danette Leisle, mdl@pacifier.com.

Service Event Set for October 4.
Mark your calendars for our next Community Service Day, Saturday, Oct, 4. Planning is under way to line up two projects.

We’ll return to Orchards Park for more general cleanup and trail clearing and also head to downtown Vancouver’s Share house for cleaning, organizing and painting.

Painting and cleaning supplies will be needed for the Share House project. Participants will be asked to bring their own supplies so that we have plenty. Details of what’s needed will be available at sign-up time.

For the Orchards Park project, please bring gloves, rakes, wheel barrows and any other tools that would be useful.

We will order T-shirts again. Order forms will be available at the sign-up table in the narthex. information: Jeff and Debbie Engley, engleys@comcast.net

Living Stones Prison visit,
re-entry training scheduled
In Matthew 25:36b and 40 Jesus says, “I was in prison and you visited me...just as you did to one of the least of these, who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Visiting the Living Stones Prison congregation is an effort to follow Jesus’ words. Persons interested in such a visit to the newest congregation in the Southwestern Washington Synod inside the wall of the Washington Correctional Center in Shelton may sign up at the church office or with Pastor Jim by Nov. 1.

You must provide your full name, birth date and Social Security number for required background checks by the State. A limit of 10 persons will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Although this is a men’s facility, women are encouraged to participate. We will leave at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, and return to St. Andrew around 10 p.m.

In addition, a training session to assist churches form re-entry teams to work with men being released from prison is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 27, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 905 N.W. 94th St, Vancouver. Four teams synod-wide now help these men re-enter civilian life. To register contact Pastor Eric Wangen-Hoch, 360-401-0371, or pastoreric@hotmail.com.

PowerPoint Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to assist with preparing the PowerPoint presentations. For information or to sign up: Contact the church office, 892-7160.
